GlobeViewer Moon offers an interactive three-dimensional representation of the entire lunar surface. Through its globe rotation view, users can explore various surface features with detailed designations. For a closer examination, a high-resolution 3D map view can be loaded to observe craters, grooves, and other elements.
Featuring four map modes, including elevation display, photo illustration, a combination of both, and a grey texture for telescope mode, the application leverages data from NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. The incorporation of surface details (normal maps) derived from elevation data enhances the display across all map modes, ensuring the visibility of even the smallest craters, elevations, grooves, and gorges.
Noteworthy in the 3D map view is the lighting design, serving to illuminate crater heights from all angles for enhanced structural visibility. While designed for improved visibility of polar regions rather than realistic lighting conditions in the globe view, telescope mode offers a realistic simulation inclusive of Moon phase and libration movement—making it a valuable tool for telescope enthusiasts.
